My motorcycle experience
In honor of Arizona Bike Week last week, I am making a second post this week (but it is also to make up for missing one a couple of weeks ago). I started riding a motorcycling back in November of 2021, so I am still very new to it. My husband has been riding for years and some of his closest and oldest friends he met through motorcycles. When we met, he was riding motorcycles and I tried to get him to teach me to ride at that time, but he was not very fond of the idea. He ended up selling his motorcycle a few years ago due to problems with his hands and most of his riding friends also sold theirs.
Fast forward to last year, his friend decided to get a motorcycle again and our neighbor has a Harley Davidson so that kickstarted his desire to ride again. Remember when I told you that he didn’t want to teach me how to ride? Well, I told him after he sold his motorcycle that if he ever wanted to get another one, he would have to teach me how to ride so I don’t always have to ride on the back of his. So, there we were, looking at naked sports bikes, and ended up getting two fairly simple and slower bikes to ride with our friends. Well, needless to say, those didn’t last long because a month later, my husband and his friend went to the Harley Davidson dealership and ended up trading their sports bikes for Harleys.
The day we bought his Harley, I signed up for a new rider course so I could learn to ride and the rest is history…well almost. Now we can talk about my bike. I took the class and about a week later, I got a Sportster Iron 1200 which was a smaller more manageable bike for a new rider, but there was no wind protection so going at high speeds on the freeways was uncomfortable for me. I rode that one for about 4 months and then in February, upgraded to a Street Glide which is a LOT heavier but SO much more comfortable, and I have never looked back.
Now my husband and I both have large, comfortable bikes (he has a Road Glide) and we really enjoy riding together. We have done so many trips and charity events over the past few months and I know we will be lifelong riders. It has been so much fun riding with old friends, new friends, and meeting new people nearly every time we ride. The community around Harleys, and motorcycles in general, is amazing. It is getting a little warm in Arizona now but I can’t wait for it to cool off again so we can ride more often. We are already planning long road trips on our motorcycles with some friends, and I am looking forward to making memories on the open road. It seriously is just like the Geico commercials…if you ride, you get it.
